Buttermilk fertilizer – Gardening 101

Don’t Waste Buttermilk! This versatile kitchen staple also makes a fantastic fertilizer, packed with nutrients like phosphorus, nitrogen, and potassium. It even boasts antifungal properties, giving your plants an extra boost of protection. A byproduct of the butter-making process, buttermilk is a natural and sustainable way to nourish your garden.

In my home, we make ghee (clarified butter) every few weeks, which leaves us with a good amount of buttermilk. We typically dilute it with water and then use it to water our plants. It’s especially beneficial for plants that thrive in acidic soil, like curry leaf and hibiscus.

Dilution is key! Never apply concentrated buttermilk directly to plant roots, as this can cause root burn. A diluted solution is gentle and effective, delivering those essential nutrients without harming your plants.

Beyond curry leaf and hibiscus, other acid-loving plants like blueberries and azaleas can also benefit from a diluted buttermilk watering. It’s a simple, natural way to give your garden a healthy dose of goodness.
